Architecting the Future

Global Open Source Knowledge Community

The Open Org Project

Shaping the architecture of organizations for a decentralized, collaborative future.

The Open Organization is a community-driven project—an open-source knowledge community originally backed by Red Hat—dedicated to exploring the principles of openness in leadership, culture, and organizational design.

This initiative was born from a need expressed by leaders across industries: How do we implement the principles of open-source collaboration at every level of leadership and management?

Architecting, Leading, and Scaling the Movement

As an ambassador, thought leader, and operational leader, I played a pivotal role in shaping the strategy and direction of this global movement. From conceptualizing the maturity model to architecting community engagement and operational frameworks, I helped build the systems that brought open organization, leadership, and culture to life across industries and governments.

I wasn’t just contributing ideas—I was designing ecosystems, aligning diverse contributors, and operationalizing frameworks to ensure that the open characteristics didn’t remain abstract ideals, but became practical tools for organizations to implement.

This wasn’t volunteerism—it was startup-level leadership, ensuring the community thrived through high-touch engagement, governance planning, and content creation.

Their impact is evident through their community’s continued growth and the practical application of their principles in organizations across different sectors.

From Thought to Action

Architecting Open Frameworks

The challenge we faced was distilling open-source principles into actionable frameworks—turning what worked in code communities into leadership models applicable across industries. Through my work, we shaped critical tools such as:

The Open Organization Maturity Model – A structured tool to assess and guide organizations on their open leadership journey.

Books and Learning Tools – Co-authoring multiple community books and resources that are now used as reference points globally.

OpenOrg TV – Designing the multimedia framework to engage and expand the community through video content.

Operational Leadership

Building for Sustainability and Growth

My role extended beyond strategy—I was actively engaged in the day-to-day leadership and governance of the community. Leading the ambassador team, driving content initiatives, and ensuring alignment across contributors were all part of the operational backbone I provided.

This work was about more than evangelizing open principles—it was about creating frameworks and systems that could be operationalized globally, from government agencies to tech enterprises.

The Transformation

Shaping the Future of Leadership

The Open Organization’s impact reaches far beyond its origins. Organizations across industries have adopted the frameworks we developed, creating more transparent, agile, and collaborative workplaces. Governments, tech companies, and educational institutions have integrated these practices into their DNA.

The insights I gained from this work led to the development of MESH methodology, which extends the principles of openness to new frontiers like decentralized leadership and multidimensional systems design.

As an ambassador, Jen has left an indelible mark on our project and our community. She was instrumental in crafting several documents vital to both our community identity and our ongoing work today—including the Open Organization Definition and Maturity Model. Her work is speckled throughout our book series, and she penned the introduction to the second edition of our Leaders Manual. And she has always served as an impassioned voice of our community, speaking at events across the world and bringing our work to receptive audiences in accessible and inviting ways.

Your contribution is immense and your vision – solid on what makes a healthy community. The video channel and much more would not have happened without you.

What Makes This Work Essential?

This project was more than an experiment in leadership—it was a foundation for the future of how organizations operate in a connected, decentralized world.

Principles to Practice – We transformed abstract ideas into actionable frameworks that leaders could immediately apply.

Sustainable Impact – By building operational systems, we ensured that the work would thrive long after individual contributors moved on.

Global Influence – Our tools and methodologies continue to shape discussions and decisions in organizations worldwide.

Final Thoughts

A Model for High-Level Strategic Leadership

This experience isn’t just a case study—it’s a demonstration of my unique ability to connect vision with execution. Whether advising governments, facilitating strategic transformation, or designing leadership frameworks, I bring both foresight and practical execution to the table.

The Open Org Project showcases not only my thought leadership but also my ability to architect sustainable change and lead at the highest levels of complexity.

About The Open Org Project

The “Open Organization” or “Open Org” is a community-driven initiative focused on exploring and promoting the use of open principles in organizational settings. These principles include transparency, adaptability, collaboration, inclusivity, and community engagement. The project is supported by Red Hat and aims to reshape how organizations operate by fostering open cultures where these values are central to leadership and management practices.

The Open Organization engages in several activities to advance its mission. They produce a range of resources, including books, case studies, and guides that help organizations implement open practices. These resources are collaboratively written by community members who come from diverse backgrounds, such as consulting, education, non-profits, and open-source software development. The community is also active in creating content that addresses contemporary organizational challenges, offering practical advice on how to incorporate open principles into various aspects of business and management.
